Use the Retail-to-Management Skills Checker

Everything stays in your browser. You can edit your answers and run it again as many times as you like.

  • I have run a shift without a manager on site

First management interviews almost always open here.

  • I have given a colleague feedback or corrected how something was done

Managing people starts with an awkward conversation you handled well.

  • I have trained someone and they were signed off

Training evidence shows you can raise a standard, not just meet one.

  • I have planned labour, a rota or task allocation

Planning who does what, when, is a core management task.

  • I understand the numbers my site is judged on

Sales, hours, waste, availability, complaints — whichever apply.

  • I have taken an action that reduced cost or waste

Any saving counts, however small, if you can describe it honestly.

  • I have resolved an escalation without passing it up

Managers absorb problems rather than moving them along.

  • I have owned a compliance, safety or audit task

A manager signs their name against standards.

  • I have introduced or embedded a change in how we work

Improvement evidence separates a supervisor from a manager.

  • I keep a record of what I have delivered

Most people lose their best evidence within a month.

How this tool works

First management roles in retail, hospitality and logistics are rarely given to the person with the best CV. They go to the person who is already doing parts of the job and can show it.

Each item here maps to something interview panels ask about: running a shift unsupervised, handling an escalation, owning a compliance task, improving how something is done. Your score is a prompt, not a verdict.

Work on the gaps deliberately. Ask for the tasks you are missing, do them, then write down what happened the same week — evidence collected later is always thinner than evidence collected on the day.

What happens to the information you enter

  • Your answers stay in your browser. Nothing is sent to a server or saved.
  • No account is needed and your employer cannot see this.
  • Refreshing the page clears your answers.

Read the EarnedStory privacy policy for the full detail.

What this tool will not do

  • It reflects common expectations across retail, hospitality and logistics, not one employer's framework.
  • A high score is not a promise of promotion, and a low score is not a reason to stop.

Frequently asked questions

I have no management experience at all. Is it worth using?
Yes — that is the point. The checker shows which parts of a management role you already touch and which to ask for next.
What if my employer uses its own framework?
Ask for it, and treat this as a starting point. The underlying evidence is usually the same.
Does this apply outside retail?
Largely yes. Hospitality, logistics, care and contact-centre first-line roles share most of these expectations.

Keep your evidence in one place

A free Career Passport records what you have actually done, dated and in your own words, so your next CV, interview or promotion case starts from evidence rather than memory.
