Use the STAR Answer Generator
Everything stays in your browser. You can edit your answers and run it again as many times as you like.
How this tool works
STAR is the format most UK employers score competency answers against. Situation sets the scene, Task says what you had to do, Action says what you personally did, and Result says what changed.
The common failures are predictable: too much scene-setting, "we" instead of "I" in the action, and no result at all. The checks under your answer look for exactly those.
Read the finished answer out loud. The tool estimates spoken length at a steady speaking pace, and anything over two minutes usually needs the Situation cutting back rather than the Action.
What happens to the information you enter
- Everything you type stays in your browser. Nothing is sent to a server and nothing is saved.
- No account is needed and no email address is asked for.
- Refreshing the page clears what you entered. Copy anything you want to keep, or save it to a free Career Passport.
Read the EarnedStory privacy policy for the full detail.
What this tool will not do
- It structures and checks your story. It does not write an experience you have not had.
- It cannot know your employer's competency framework. Match the example to the question you expect.
Frequently asked questions
- What if I do not have a measurable result?
- Say what changed in words. "The queue cleared and the customer came back the following week" is a real result. Never invent a percentage.
- How long should a STAR answer be?
- Roughly one to two minutes spoken, which is about 90 to 260 words. The tool shows both counts.
- Can I use the same story twice?
- In one interview, try not to. Three or four different stories will cover most competency questions.
Keep your evidence in one place
A free Career Passport records what you have actually done, dated and in your own words, so your next CV, interview or promotion case starts from evidence rather than memory.
