How our career data is built.

Where our UK career profiles, skills, pay guidance and live vacancies come from, how each one is reviewed by a person before it is published, and what the figures can and cannot tell you.

Where the information comes from

Career profiles are built from published, openly documented sources and from how UK employers actually describe roles in advertised vacancies.

  • Occupation names, alternative job titles and skill labels from the European Skills, Competences and Occupations (ESCO) classification.
  • Live UK vacancies supplied through the Adzuna job-advert API, which aggregates listings from authorised job platforms.
  • Published UK careers information on entry routes, apprenticeships, licences and regulated professions.
  • Editorial writing by the EarnedStory Editorial Team, describing responsibilities, progression and the honest good and hard parts of a role.

How we collect it

We only use documented interfaces that providers publish for this purpose, under their own terms. We do not scrape websites and we do not copy other career sites' written content.

Each profile records which source it came from and when it was last synchronised. Where an outside source is used, it is credited on the career page.

How profiles are reviewed before publication

Nothing is published automatically. An imported profile arrives as a draft and sits in a review queue until a person reads it.

A profile only becomes public when it has a genuine description, a meaningful set of skills and real responsibilities. Thin profiles are held back rather than published as weak pages.

Every profile moves through draft, awaiting review, approved, published or archived. Imports add to profiles; they never overwrite wording a reviewer has written.

Pay and hours guidance

Pay ranges are indicative guidance in pounds sterling, drawn from advertised UK vacancies and published careers information. They are not offers and they are not a prediction of what you will be paid.

Real pay varies with employer, region, shift pattern, sector and experience. Treat the ranges as a starting point for your own research, not as a figure to quote back to an employer.

Live vacancies

Vacancies shown against a career are supplied by authorised third-party job platforms and link out to the original advert. We do not edit them and we cannot confirm that a listing is still open.

EarnedStory is not a recruitment agency. We do not employ, place or represent candidates, and we take no fee from employers.

Vacancies are refreshed regularly. When a listing closes or stops appearing it is marked as no longer live rather than quietly deleted.

How your matches are worked out

Career matches compare what you have recorded in your Career Passport with a career profile across skills, experience, education, interests, working environment and location or pay preferences, each carrying a different weighting.

Where a career can be entered through an apprenticeship, work experience or a vocational qualification, not having a degree does not count against you. Where a profession is regulated by law, the page says so plainly and explains what is genuinely required.

Every recommendation explains itself: which of your skills and evidence matched, what is missing, and what to do next. Matches are guidance, not a judgement on your ability and not a guarantee of employment.

Mistakes and updates

Career information changes. Each profile shows the date it was last reviewed.

If a profile is out of date or wrong, tell us the career and what is wrong with it, and we will check and correct it.
