Career Roadmap

The Career Roadmap turns your recorded achievements and goals into a structured career development plan, with near, medium and long-term actions, clear milestones, and a monthly progress report so you can see whether you are actually moving forward.

What the Career Roadmap does

A lot of career plans are written once, filed away, and never looked at again. The Career Roadmap is built to be used month to month. It takes the evidence you have recorded in EarnedStory, together with the goal you set — a promotion, a sideways move, a new sector — and organises what needs to happen into three horizons: things to do in the next month, the next quarter, and over the coming year.

Each horizon is broken into specific actions and milestones, not vague ambitions. Rather than 'develop leadership skills', you get something like 'take on supervising one shift a week for the next month and record how it goes'. Milestones are things you can actually tick off, and they are grounded in what is realistic given the evidence you already have.

Every month, the roadmap generates a short progress report based on what you have recorded since the last check-in, showing what moved forward, what stalled, and what the next month's actions should be. It is a working plan that adjusts as your evidence grows, not a document you write once and forget.

Who it is for

  • Anyone who has a career goal in mind but no clear plan for getting from here to there
  • People preparing for a promotion who want a structured run-up rather than a last-minute scramble
  • Managers setting development plans with their team who want something more concrete than a yearly review form
  • Career changers who need to sequence what to learn, build and record before applying into a new field
  • Anyone who has tried setting career goals before and found they quietly dropped off within a few weeks
  • People who want accountability without hiring a coach, through a simple monthly check-in on real progress

How it works, in three steps

  1. Step 1

Set your goal and starting point

Tell the tool what you are working towards — a promotion, a role change, a new sector — and it looks at the achievements and skills evidence you already have recorded as your starting point.

  2. Step 2

    Get your horizon-based plan

The roadmap sets out specific actions and milestones across three horizons: the next month, the next quarter, and the year ahead, sequenced so earlier actions build the evidence later ones need.

  3. Step 3

    Track progress with monthly reports

As you record new achievements, the roadmap checks them against your milestones and produces a short monthly progress report, showing what has moved and what your focus should be next.

An example, start to finish

Goal and existing evidence

  • Goal: move from team member to shift supervisor within 12 months
  • Recorded evidence: trained two new starters, covered a supervisor's shift for three days

Career Roadmap output

  • Next month: ask manager for one regular shift-lead slot; record the outcome each time
  • Next quarter: build at least two more recorded examples of independent problem-solving; request formal feedback on supervisory cover
  • Next year: apply for or request formal supervisor role, backed by a full evidence set covering training, problem-solving and leadership
  • Monthly report: 'Milestone met — one shift-lead slot secured and two instances recorded. Next focus: request formal feedback.'

Every action and milestone is generated from the goal you set and the evidence you actually record — nothing is assumed about progress that has not been logged.

Why people use it

Turn a vague ambition into concrete steps

Replace 'I want to progress' with a specific set of actions and milestones you can actually work through.

See progress, not just intentions

Monthly progress reports show what has genuinely moved forward, based on what you have recorded, not on how the month felt.

Sequence your evidence-building sensibly

Horizon-based actions make sure you build the evidence a later step will need, rather than jumping ahead unprepared.

Stay accountable without a coach

The monthly check-in gives you the structure of regular review without needing to pay for or schedule one.

Adjust as things change

If your goal shifts or an opportunity comes up early, the roadmap updates around the evidence you actually have, not a plan set in stone.

Walk into reviews prepared

Bring a clear, evidenced account of progress towards your goal to appraisals or promotion conversations, rather than a general impression.

Your information and your privacy

  • Your roadmap is built only from the goal you set and the achievements you choose to record.
  • Progress reports are generated privately for you and are never shared with an employer unless you choose to share them.
  • You can change your goal or edit recorded achievements at any time, and the roadmap will update accordingly.
  • Milestones are only ever marked as met based on evidence you have actually recorded, never assumed progress.

Frequently asked questions

What counts as a 'horizon' in the Career Roadmap?
A horizon is a time window for action: the next month, the next quarter, and the year ahead. Each one has its own set of actions and milestones, sequenced so the near-term work builds the evidence the longer-term goals need.
How does the monthly progress report work?
Each month, the roadmap checks the achievements you have recorded since the last report against your current milestones. It tells you which milestones have genuine evidence behind them now, which are still outstanding, and what to focus on next.
What if I don't hit a milestone in the time set?
The roadmap is not a deadline you fail. If a milestone is not met, the next progress report simply carries it forward and adjusts the plan, since career progression rarely runs exactly to schedule.
Can I use this for a promotion in my current job, not a new one?
Yes. The roadmap works equally well for internal promotion goals, sideways moves, or entirely new sectors — it builds around whatever goal you set and the evidence relevant to it.
Does the roadmap invent progress if I haven't recorded much?
No. EarnedStory only ever generates content from evidence you have recorded yourself. If little has been logged in a given month, the progress report will say so plainly rather than filling the gap with invented achievements.
How is this different from the Skills Evidence Map?
The Skills Evidence Map shows where your evidence currently stands, skill by skill. The Career Roadmap uses that same evidence, plus a stated goal, to build a forward-looking plan of actions and milestones with monthly tracking.
