Skills Evidence Map
The Skills Evidence Map takes the achievements you have already recorded and sorts them against the skills employers actually ask for, so you can see at a glance which ones are backed by real evidence and which ones are just claims.

What the Skills Evidence Map does
Most people can list the skills they think they have. Far fewer can point to a specific moment that proves each one. The Skills Evidence Map closes that gap by reading through the achievements you have logged in EarnedStory and matching each one to the skills it actually demonstrates — communication, problem-solving, people management, budgeting, and so on.
The result is a simple picture: skills with strong evidence behind them, skills with only thin or old evidence, and skills you claim on your CV but currently have nothing recorded to support. Nothing is invented or assumed. If you have not recorded an achievement that shows a skill, the map will not pretend otherwise — it will show it as a gap instead.
This turns a vague sense of 'I should probably work on my skills' into a specific, ordered list of what to go and do next, whether that is taking on a task at work that would generate the missing evidence, or simply recording something you have already done but never wrote down.
Who it is for
- Anyone preparing for appraisals, promotion conversations or job applications who wants to know what they can actually prove
- People who suspect their CV overstates skills they cannot currently back up with a real example
- Managers and supervisors who want a clear picture of their team-leadership evidence before applying for the next role up
- Career changers who need to see which of their existing skills already transfer, and which ones still need building
- Anyone updating a CV or LinkedIn profile who keeps writing the same generic skills list without knowing if it holds up
- People returning to the job market after time away who want an honest starting point rather than guesswork
- Members who already use the Achievement Builder and want to see their evidence organised by skill, not just by date
How it works, in three steps
Step 1
Draw on your recorded achievements
The tool reads through the achievements you have already logged in EarnedStory — the situations, actions and outcomes you recorded yourself. It does not ask you to fill in a separate skills questionnaire from scratch.
Step 2
Match evidence to skills
Each achievement is checked against a working list of common workplace skills to see which ones it genuinely demonstrates, based only on what you actually wrote, not on assumption or inference beyond the evidence.
Step 3
See your map of strengths and gaps
You get a clear view split into three groups: skills with solid evidence, skills with only weak or single-instance evidence, and skills with no recorded evidence at all — so you know exactly where to focus.
An example, start to finish
Achievements already recorded in EarnedStory
- Trained two new starters on till procedures and checked their progress after a week
- Resolved a delivery discrepancy with a supplier by cross-checking paperwork against stock
- Covered the shift supervisor's duties for three days during a staff shortage
Skills Evidence Map output
- Strong evidence: Training & coaching (1 example), Problem-solving (1 example)
- Some evidence: People leadership (1 example — worth recording a second instance)
- No evidence recorded: Budgeting, Data analysis, Conflict resolution
The map only reflects achievements you have recorded. It will not credit a skill without a genuine example behind it.
Why people use it
Stop guessing what to put on your CV
Know exactly which skills you can support with a real example, so every claim on your CV has something solid behind it.
Spot gaps before an employer does
Find out where your evidence is thin while you still have time to build it, rather than being caught out in an interview.
Focus your effort
Instead of trying to improve everything at once, see the two or three skills where building evidence would make the biggest difference.
Make appraisals more specific
Walk into a review with a clear picture of which of your objectives you can already evidence and which need attention.
Track progress over time
As you record new achievements, the map updates, so you can watch genuine gaps close rather than relying on memory.
Build honestly, not aspirationally
Every entry on the map traces back to something you actually did, so your skills list never outruns your evidence.
Your information and your privacy
- The map is built only from achievements you have chosen to record in your own EarnedStory account.
- Your data is never shared with employers or third parties without your explicit action to share it.
- You can edit or remove any recorded achievement at any time, which will update the map accordingly.
- No skill is ever credited to you based on assumption, inference beyond your evidence, or generic job-title patterns.

Frequently asked questions
- How does the Skills Evidence Map decide which skills I have?
- It only looks at the achievements you have recorded yourself and matches them against a working list of common workplace skills. If an achievement genuinely demonstrates a skill, it counts as evidence; if you have not recorded anything that shows a skill, it appears as a gap rather than being assumed.
- What if I have done something but never wrote it down?
- The map can only work with what has been recorded, so if you know you have relevant experience that is not yet logged, the best next step is to add it as an achievement using the Achievement Builder. It will then feed straight into your map.
- Will this tell me I'm bad at something?
- It will not judge your ability. It simply shows where you currently have recorded evidence and where you do not. A gap on the map means there is no evidence recorded yet, not that you lack the skill — it is a prompt to record or build proof, not a verdict.
- Can I use this for a career change into a different sector?
- Yes. The map is useful for seeing which of your existing skills already transfer to a new field and which ones you would need to build fresh evidence for, which is often the hardest part of planning a career change.
- Does the map make things up if my evidence is thin?
- No. EarnedStory only ever generates content from evidence you have recorded yourself. If your evidence for a skill is thin, the map will show it as thin or missing rather than filling the gap with invented detail.
- How often should I check my Skills Evidence Map?
- It is worth revisiting whenever you add new achievements, before an appraisal, or when you start thinking seriously about your next role, since the picture changes as your recorded evidence grows.
