Paste in a job advert and see exactly which requirements your recorded evidence already covers, which keywords are missing, and how to tailor your CV and application honestly — without inventing anything you can't back up.

What the Job Application Tailor does
Job Application Tailor takes a job advert you paste in and compares it against the evidence already sitting in your Career Passport — your recorded achievements, skills and experience. It runs a deterministic keyword and phrase match, the same kind of check an applicant tracking system (ATS) might run, so you can see plainly which requirements in the advert you already have solid evidence for, and which ones aren't currently covered.
It doesn't guess at what a hiring manager wants to hear or write anything designed to sound impressive without substance. The keyword analysis is a straightforward comparison of the advert's language against your recorded evidence, and any suggested wording pulls only from things you've told EarnedStory you've actually done. Where the advert asks for something you haven't recorded evidence for, the tool tells you that clearly rather than papering over the gap.
The output is a tailored version of your CV and, where relevant, application answers, plus a plain summary of keyword matches and gaps. Nothing is sent anywhere or applied on your behalf — every version is saved so you can compare it against the original, edit it, and approve it before you use it for a real application.
Who it is for
- Anyone applying for a specific job and wanting their CV to genuinely reflect what that advert is asking for
- People who suspect their CV is being filtered out by ATS software before a human ever sees it
- Career changers who need to reframe existing evidence in the language a new sector or role uses
- Anyone applying for several similar roles who wants a quick way to adjust their CV for each one
- People who've been told their applications aren't landing interviews and want to check why
- Jobseekers who want to avoid vague, generic CVs that could apply to any job going
- Anyone unsure which of their own experiences are actually relevant to a specific advert
How it works, in three steps
Step 1
Paste in the job advert
Copy the full job description and paste it into the tool. The more complete the advert — responsibilities, requirements, and any "desirable" extras — the more accurate the keyword and evidence comparison will be.
Step 2
Review the keyword and evidence match
The tool runs a deterministic comparison between the advert's language and the evidence in your Career Passport, showing what's already well covered, what's partially covered, and what has no supporting evidence at all yet.
Step 3
Tailor, save a version, and approve
Use the match report to adjust your CV and application answers, drawing only on evidence you've recorded. Each tailored version is saved separately so you can compare it with the original and previous versions, and nothing is used until you've reviewed and approved it.
An example, start to finish
What a member pastes in
- Job advert excerpt: "We're looking for a Deputy Store Manager with experience managing rotas, handling escalated customer complaints, and supporting stock control. Experience training junior staff is desirable."
What the tool produces
- Match summary: Strong match on "rotas" and "training junior staff" — supported by evidence already in your Career Passport (rota management for a team of 8; trained 3 new starters over 2025).
- Partial match on "escalated customer complaints" — you have general customer service evidence recorded, but nothing specifically about handling escalations. Suggest adding a specific example if you have one.
- No current evidence for "stock control" — this requirement isn't covered by anything recorded yet. Flagged as a gap rather than invented.
- A tailored CV draft that reorders and reweights your existing bullet points to lead with the strongest matches, using the advert's own terminology where your evidence genuinely supports it.
The tool never invents the missing stock control experience — it tells you honestly that the gap exists so you can decide whether to address it, mention transferable evidence, or leave the advert's requirement unmet.
Why people use it
See gaps before a recruiter does
Spotting an unaddressed requirement before you submit means you can decide how to handle it, rather than being caught out at interview.
Built for ATS reality
The keyword analysis reflects how many recruitment systems actually screen applications, so your CV is more likely to reach a human reviewer.
No invented claims
Every suggestion is grounded in evidence you've recorded yourself, so what you submit is something you can confidently discuss at interview.
Faster tailoring for multiple applications
Reusing your Career Passport evidence means each new tailored version takes minutes rather than starting your CV from scratch each time.
A clear before-and-after
Saved versions let you see precisely what changed and why, rather than losing track of which CV went to which employer.
You stay in control
Nothing is submitted automatically. You review, edit and approve every tailored version before it's used for a real application.
Your information and your privacy
- Job adverts you paste in are used only to run the comparison against your own recorded evidence, and are not shared with employers, recruiters or third parties.
- Your Career Passport evidence stays under your control — the tool reads from it to generate tailored content but doesn't publish or send anything without your approval.
- Tailored versions are saved to your account so you can review, compare and delete them as you choose.
- EarnedStory doesn't apply for jobs on your behalf or share your data with the employer named in an advert.
Read the EarnedStory privacy policy for the full detail.
Frequently asked questions
- Will this write my CV for me from nothing?
- No. It works only from evidence already recorded in your Career Passport. If you haven't recorded much evidence yet, the tool will tell you where the gaps are rather than inventing content to fill them.
- Is the keyword match the same as a real ATS system?
- It's a deterministic, rules-based comparison designed to reflect common ATS behaviour, such as matching exact phrases and key terms from the advert. It's a strong indicator, but individual employer systems vary, so treat it as guidance rather than a guarantee of passing any specific screening tool.
- What happens if I don't have evidence for a key requirement?
- The tool flags it clearly as a gap rather than inventing something to cover it. You can then decide whether to add genuine evidence, highlight a transferable skill, or apply anyway and be ready to discuss the gap honestly at interview.
- Can I tailor the same CV for several different jobs?
- Yes. Each tailored version is saved separately, so you can create a different version for each advert without losing track of the original or previous versions.
- Does the tool submit my application automatically?
- No. It only produces a tailored draft. You review, edit and approve everything before using it in a real application, and EarnedStory never submits anything on your behalf.
- Can I use this if I'm changing career direction entirely?
- Yes — it's often most useful here, since it helps you see which of your existing evidence genuinely transfers to the new role's language, and which gaps you'd need to address separately.
